Rowan doesn't believe he has a brave heart. But when the river that supports his village of Rin runs dry, he must join a dangerous journey to its source in the forbidden Mountain. To save Rin, Rowan and his companions must conquer not only the Mountain's many tricks, but also the fierce dragon that lives at its peak. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - A good introduction to fantasy-adventureSome reviews have criticized the use of familiar fantasy elements in this first book in the Rin series. Yes, Rowan is part of a team going on a difficult quest, and the book does have some of the typical quest challenges (like the threatening spiders we also saw in Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter). However, I don't see that as a drawback. This book is intended for really young readers (I would say 2nd-4th grades), and for them, this can be an excellent introduction to some of the conventions ... Read More Rating: - From J. Kaye's Book BlogRowan, the most timid in his village, is a herder of the Bukshah (a cow-like creatures). Everyone keeps making fun of him for not being brave. But when the Bukshah's river dries up, it is up to Rowan and six others to save them. Along the way they meet giant spiders, a deadly swamp, a dangerous underground lake, and a dragon, on their quest. My 11 year old daughter says, this book is great for any fantasy and adventure lover. Rating: - Great fantasy and lessons for any ageAdmittedly, I had trouble going about beginning to read this. I am a huge fan of Deltora and feared that nothing else would measure up.But here we meet Rowan, a sweet young boy with whom young readers will identify. Rather than the sweeping imagination of other books, Rodda provides a satisfying adventure to save a small village. This is a character-driven tale of personal growth, a classic underdog story told in Rodda's simple-but-enchanting style. Rating: - Wonderful story!I bought this book for my 8 yr old son. He absolutely loved it! And I thought it taught some very real life truths for 8yr old boys. We will definitely be ordering the remainder of the series. Rating: - Beautiful SeriesThis is a terrific series that I, as well as my 9 yr old son, really enjoyed reading. My son is a big reader of fantasy and I liked it that this book presents some deeper issues very thoughtfully, something that many books of this genre for this age group do not do. It was a good family read.
