He did not abide by the rules of his day; the people he associated with were shunned by society; his Sermon on the Mount reads likea primer on being left behind, stepped on, and ignored. In order for us to truly be the people Jesus wants us to be, we too must learn to become "foolish." Becoming a Christian is not a magical enterprise by which we are automatically transformed into better people. We must train to become who God intends us to be. In The Importance of Being Foolish, bestselling Christian author Brennan Manning teaches us how to think like Jesus. By reorienting our lives according to the gospel we may appear to be fools in the eyes of the world, but Manning reveals that this is exactly what Jesus wants. In a powerful exploration of the mind of Christ, Manning reveals how our obsession with security, pleasure, and power prevents us from living rich and meaningful lives. Our endless struggle to acquire money, good feelings, and prestige yields a rich harvest of worry, frustration, and resentment. Manning explores what Christ's mind was truly focused on: finding the Father, compassion for others, a heart of forgiveness, and the work of the kingdom. Coming from the gentle yet compelling voice of Brennan Manning, The Importance of Being Foolish is a refreshing reminder of the radical call of Jesus and the transforming love of God. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Got the messageThis is the second of his books that I have read. I enjoyed and was more inspired by the Ragamuffin Gospel. The Importance of Being Foolish seemed to me to be more preachy and repetitive. I will still continue to read this author's other books. His style is easy and his background - where he is coming from - helps my understanding immensely. Rating: - very goodthere isn't one chapter that does not leave the reader unchallenged. i truly admire the way the author makes sure that he does not cut corners or water down the gospel. the author makes sure, by the grace of GOD, that no human excuse or lie is left unexposed. it is essentially a book about repentance and Truth, because true repentance of sins and the heartfelt acknowledgement of Jesus Christ as LORD is the only way for us humans to think like Jesus. Without these two things, you can learn about ... Read More Rating: - Another Manning ClassicBrennan Manning forever secured his place as an important theologian with The Ragamuffin Gospel. If he never wrote another book, he has served Christianity well with one of the most important books ever written about the faith. But in his book The Importance of Living Foolish, Manning continues his quest to promote a belief in Christ the recognizes the folly of the modern world and its preoccupation with foolish, fleeting things. At the same time, as in The Ragamuffin Gospel, ... Read More Rating: - Puts into words my own viewI've always thought the Christian message to be a radical rejection of worldy values. But what's generally preached is a watered down version of this message. Manning boldly and in his familiar style asserts that what the world views as foolish is the wisdom of God. It's a tough message but a wonderful one. Rating: - ExcellentOnce again Manning calls us out beyond the darkness of pharisaical competition for heavens gate. Where the light of gods unbounded LOVE cradles us and reminds us that because we are so loved, we must love as well. Bless this guy, he has stood up after many falls, and I pray he will continue to enlighten us.
