Now, in The Divine Hours Pocket EditionTM, Tickle has gathered one full week of fixed-hour prayers, providing an ideal companion for travelers, office-workers, people on retreat or pilgrimage, as well as newcomers to this age-old spiritual practice. As Tickle writes in her introduction, "prayer is always a place as well as an action, and the daily offices are like small chapels or wayside stations within the day's courses." Seven of these daily offices are offered for each day of the week, and each office contains the Call to Prayer, the Request for Presence, the Greeting, the Reading, the Gloria, the Psalm, the Small Verse, the Lord's Prayer, the Petition, and the Final Thanksgiving. Tickle draws her texts primarily from the Book of Common Prayer and the writings of the Church Fathers, and includes memorable devotional and meditative poems by Cleland McAfee, Charles Wesley, and others. Tickle also provides a chapter of "Traditional, Seasonal, and Occasional Prayers" in order to accommodate special dates like Advent, Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving; major life-changes such as marriage, birth, death, and illness; and moments of special petition or thanksgiving. For all those who want to carry a "small chapel" of prayers with them, The Divine Hours Pocket EditionTM offers a convenient, easy-to-use, and deeply spiritual guide to a devotional practice that extends all the way back to Christ and the twelve Apostles. ![]() Rating: - rich and condensedI own Tickles 3 volume work The Divine Hours. The beauty of this little volume is the simplicity of it, one has only the days of the week rather than a years calendar for prayers. Obviously this leaves a lot of material out, but it is much more accessible and manageable. There are, as in the larger work, some real treasures in the daily prayers, such as hymns like Cowpers God Moves In Mysterious Ways, along with quotes from the great mystics. I also like very much the prayers included in the back, ... Read More Rating: - Praying the Divine HoursThis is a great travel companion to the other prayer books by Phyllis Tickle. It is nice to have a place to go for prayer at any of the 7 times that are covered by this book. I am a pastor of an evangelical church and I have moved our church toward praying the "offices." The three seasonal books by Phyllis Tickle are the best, but this book allows much flexibility and is a good place for someone to start. Rating: - A little disappointmentAfter using the three-volume Divine Hours for the past two years, and wishing it were less cumbersome to carry about, I was pleased to discover this pocket edition for everyday use. I like the format and the prayers chosen quite well. However, I'm surprised that the design did not include a ribbon bookmark--essential in a volume like this. Also, for such a short book, I have found a distressing number of typographical errors. I hope to see these things corrected in the next edition. Rating: - convenient for travelthis little volume comes in handy for me when I am traveling, which I do a lot. I can continue to do the Hours as at home without hauling around a thick book in my suitcase. Rating: - Wonderful Prayer Source In Only 123 PagesOnce again, Phyllis Tickle does a superb job of adapting the traditional prayers of the hours to modern life. This very compact tome contains an excellent prayer set arranged for the traditional seven offices for each of the seven days in the week. This volume is excellent, not only for travel, but when time does not permit the use of the more extended hourly offices found in the larger prayer books by the same author. I own all of the Phyllis Tickle "The Divine Hours TM" and cherish each.
