Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Until three years ago, Dixie Hemingway was a deputy with the Sarasota County Sherriff's Department in southwest Florida. Then came a tragic accident. Now Dixie's a pet-sitter on Siesta Key, a lush, exotic barrier island where the people tend to be rich, suntanned, and tolerant of one another's quirks.
As Dixie tried to get her life back in order, pet-sitting is the perfect job. She goes into people's homes while they're gone and takes care of their pets; she likes the animals, they like her, and she doesn't have to deal with people very much. She especially does not have to be afraid that she'll run into a situation that will cause her to lose her hard-won composure.
But when Dixie finds a man bizarrely drowned in a cat's water bowl, she is drawn into a tangled web of danger and secrets. Unbeknownst to Lieutenant Guidry, the homicide detective handling the murder, Dixie begins her own investigation into the whereabouts of the cat's owner, who has now vanished. Fans of The Cat Who... book series by Lilian Jackson Braun will adore this riveting new pet-oriented sleuth and will eagerly await Dixie's next case: Will duplicity dog the dachshund?

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Mystery & cats are a great combination
Comparative behavior of cats and dogs is an added bonus to this Florida-based mystery. Although I figured out the killer early, I was tempted to change my mind with many of the red herrings. The pet sitter has odd hours, use of a dog's sense of smell, and access to empty homes which are plausible reasons to discover a crime scene and clues. Her characters are flawed and sympathetic for the most part. I look forward to the next Dixie Hemingway mystery.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Bravery beyond the call of duty
As with all successful series, it is nice to start with the first book, which this is. I enjoy the way the author evokes the setting and makes you feel like you are lazing around that area yourself. The main characater, Dixie Hemingway, is struggling along in life after the loss of her husband and daughter. I admire her bravery. She comes from law enforcement and knows her limitations in her current emotional state. And it takes bravery just to put oneself out there entering other people's homes ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Well-Plotted, Clement Has An Excellent Sense of Place
Dixie Hemingway (no kin to Ernest, she tells you on the first page) lives on Siesta Key in Sarasota, Florida. Her career as a sheriff's deputy ended when her young daughter and her husband, also a deputy, were killed in a car accident.

Now she is up every morning at four a.m. to make her rounds as a pet sitter. She prefers dealing with animals rather than people. But all is not as quiet and tranquil as she'd hoped. One morning when she arrives to care for Ghost, a gray Abyssinian cat, she ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Good first book mystery
This is the first book in a new mystery series by Blaize Clement. I throughtly enjoyed this new mystery and I'm looking forward to the next books in this series. I loved Dixie's character, her pet-sitting business, and the animal character. This is a series to look forward, too.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - boredom killed the reader
There is an excellent plot in this book. However, the descriptions of the day to day running of a pet-sitting firm are endless and better suited to a guide to starting your own business(half a page devoted to how she logs entries of the daily activities of each pet) or a how-to book for pet care (another half page describing how to brush a cat).

Some of Dixie's actions also make no sense. She walks into a client's house and finds that the bedroom has been tossed. She decides to feed the ... Read More
