The "book of the dead" is the morgue log, a ledger in which all cases are entered by hand. For Kay Scarpetta, however, it is about to take on a new meaning. Fresh from her bruising battle with a psychopath in Florida, Scarpetta decides it's time for a change of pace, not only personally and professionally but geographically. Moving to the historic city of Charleston, South Carolina, she opens a unique private forensic pathology practice, one in which she and her colleagues-including Pete Marino and her niece, Lucy-offer expert crime-scene investigation and autopsy services to communities lacking local access to modern, competent death investigation technology. It seems like an ideal situation, until the new battles start-with local politicians, with entrenched interests, with someone whose covert attempts at sabotage are clearly meant to run Scarpetta out of town. And that's before the murders and other violent deaths even begin. A young man from a well-known family jumps off a water tower. A woman is found ritualistically murdered in her multimillion-dollar beach home. The body of an abused young boy is discovered dumped in a desolate marsh. Meanwhile, in distant New England, problems with a prominent patient at a Harvard-affiliated psychiatric hospital begin to hint at interconnections that are as hard to imagine as they are horrible. Kay Scarpetta has dealt with many brutal and unusual crimes before, but never a string of them as baffling, or as terrifying, as the ones confronting her now. Before she is through, that book of the dead will contain many names-and the pen may be poised to write in her own. The first name in forensics. The last name in suspense. Once again, Patricia Cornwell proves her exceptional ability to entertain and enthrall. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Awful!I have no idea what Ms. Cornwell is thinking - her first 5 or 6 books in this series were so good, but they have deteriorated rapidly since then. I don't like any of these people anymore, or care what happens to them. I quit buying the books in hardcover, waiting for the paperback, but I will not buy or read ANY MORE! The plot makes little sense, the solution comes from nowhere, there are loose ends abounding - I could go on and on! Rating: - Her worst book !!This has got to be one of the worst books she has written. It looks like this is her rant against the Iraq war. She seems to hate everybody and everything in US goverment, I guess she is just another "I hate George Bush" person. Very sloppy and jumps around alot. She seems do have to much detail about equipment and it was DULL!! Near the end of the book it looks like she just got tired and quit. There is no real ending, but it was a relief to get to the end of this mess ! This book needed 0 ... Read More Rating: - What happened to Marino?I've always enjoyed Patricia Cornwell's books but this one leaves me feeling like I've just watched an episode of "Desperate Housewifes" with the ending "Tune in next week to find out what happened to Marino". Bad. Rating: - Ends with a whimper not a bangSad to say, I agree with Terry Mathews and Ellen in Atlanta...we never even saw the "unthinkable" bad guy...there were elements of cannibalism which were never explained or made any sense...too many convolutions and loose ends blowing in the wind of Lucy's helicopter. I read "Trace" and even though it's got bad reader reviews too, I liked it enough to get this one. I read this obsessively to find out whodunit...and when I found out, I didn't feel like I found out...looks like I should go back and ... Read More Rating: - Cornwell's political agenda is obvious; the writing poorI used to be a fan. This book is boring. Moreover, I resent her pandering to anti-President Bush sentiment and bringing the controversy over the treatment of terrorists into what should be an entertaining novel. I think she was just trying to please the literary critics in the UK.
