Stevenson shines here, managing to carefully craft a story for children that will also appeal to adults. The boy hero of the story is respected enough to be included in the plans and tribulations of the adults onboard, but is not kowtowed to the point of offending adult sensibilities. If you are 11 or 12, you may want to read this book with an adult, but you'll love the adventure and pirates, the treasure map and the Hispanola.
