Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Gusty Peterson, the hottest bimboy in school, is always thinking I’m sick, as in totally gross to look at. Not that it matters, since I don’t have a crush on him or anything. And Mallory, my first real friend since forever, has disturbing romantic ideas about me and my ginormous gazungas.

Ask me if I’d rather not know these things.

I have enough to worry about with my dad showing up after two years of saving Africa from typhoid, ready to resuscitate our relationship. There’s something he’s not telling me. I know it.

And now I’ve been assigned to work with Gusty in a hideous new project the faculty are torturing us with at school. It’s so wonderful to explore yourself with someone who’s always thinking you’re sick.

I’d probably be a lot better off if I weren’t psychic after all . . .

“If you ever thought reading people’s minds would make it easier to understand them, Amy Kathleen Ryan is here to tell you that you’re dead wrong. Funny, fresh, and heartfelt, Vibes zigs when you expect it to zag, and will have you both laughing out loud and rooting for Kristi to discover the truth about her parents, her friends, and herself.” – Barry Lyga, author of The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Being a teenager is bad enough...
Being a teenager is bad enough; but, what is a girl do do when she can hear all the catty remarks people are thinking about her? Kristi hates being overweight. She hates her mother's insane health food kick. She hates that her father left them several years ago. But, Kristi is spunky. She makes her own clothes out of "found objects", has a wicked sense of humor, and listens to opera in order to drown out the unwelcome thoughts of everyone around her.

This is a fun read and anyone who ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A quirky, edgy coming-of-age novel with a whiff of psychic mystery
I didn't start out liking Kristi Carmichael, our main character: she is hostile, sarcastic, sometimes intentionally cruel to strangers and classmates alike. I was drawn into the story, however, and she grew on me, with her creativity, her ability to admit to her own faults, and her eventual willingness to question the unquestioned postulates of her life.

There is a lot of ugliness in this story - think of your own high school experiences, viewed through the jaundiced eye of a hostile ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - It was alright, but not fantastic
Let's see. I'm fourteen, and I picked this up at the book store because it looked interesting. Over all? It was ok. There were a bunch of...awkward moments for me, but I may have just been a tad too young for this literature.

Besides that, I think this book has a very good demonstration of the emotional feelings a teenage girl goes through. People can think some really harsh things, and it kind of makes you realize that with so many problems in the world, we as humans can be really cruel ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Intelligent high school drama with a strong memorable heroine
You will either fall into one of two camps when you read this book: You will be captivated by Kristi Carmichael, who is no Gossip Girl clone but as unique as the clothes she makes out of old umbrellas and discarded fabric, or you will dismiss her as just another self-absorbed angsty wannabe psychic teen heroine who reminds you uncomfortably of your own high school dramas. But you can't ignore her. Amy Kathleen Ryan's voice is strong, biting and "defiant," as not-so-dumb hunk Gusty Peterson dubs Kristi ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Truly Terrible YA Novel Has Sociopathic Main Character
Supposedly written for ages twelve to seventeen, this YA novel would be more believable if the main character's age was increased by thirty years. I have never read anything by this author before, but she obviously does not know any real teenagers. She is, however, very familiar with a wide variety of deviant personality traits and aberrant behaviors. I would not recommend this book for anyone, but especially I would not recommend it for teenagers. The book is ugly and mean-spirited.

The ... Read More
