His role as leader of the Irish Uprising of 1848 against British rule, combined with his revolutionary fervor, had earned him exile to the British penal colony of Van Diemen's Land , off the coast of Australia. He escaped and found passage to America, where he was celebrated as a man who had risked death to end the suffering of his native land. In New York, Meagher became an attorney, married wealthy Libby Townsend, engaged in Tammany politics, supported Franklin Pierce's bid for the presidency, and gave brilliant "Young Ireland" speeches until the onslaught of the Civil War. Fighting for the Union, Meagher helped organize and command the Irish Brigade, and stood, sword in hand, at the forefront of its battles on such bloody ground at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Chancellorsville. The war took its toll on Meagher's soul and spirit. By its end he was ruined spiritually and financially-until President Andrew Johnson appointed him acting governor of the Montana Territory. In this isolated outpost, the redoubtable Irishman faced formidable foes-hostile Indians, controlling vigilantes, and a government paralyzed by factionalism. The Exile is the story of this dashing man of action, a man who inspired ballads and songs, a man who risked everything on behalf of his ideals. His legacy carries on through his name--Thomas Francis Meagher-still revered among the Irish everywhere. Only Richard S. Wheeler, who has brought to life such historical characters as Bat Masterson, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, could do justice to this giant of Irish history and folklore. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Very Good Book...Will Make You ThinkI really did enjoy this book. It make me think about what has been and is going on in the Palestine/Israel conflict. Richard North Patterson does an excellent job of creating two lead characters that have a forbidden past plus many minor characters that shock you. Mr. Patterson uses the two leads to uncover and explore the Middle Eastern conflict that has been going on for thousands of years. There are numerous twists and turns. Some that you expect and others that come out of the blue but make ... Read More Rating: - ExileRichard North Patterson is a magnificent storyteller with a knowledge base grounded in the reality of how the world operates. All of his books are great reads, Exile is possibly his best. Rating: - Fascinating and entertainingAs an avid fan of Patterson's novels, I think this may be his best effort. An action-packed page-turner with well-developed, likable characters, it also provides an interesting background on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict that leads (or at least led me to) further study and interest. Not only could I not put this book down, but I almost immediately began studying the conflict afterward, and feel quite educated as a result. Patterson does an excellent job of exploring the conflict from a neutral ... Read More Rating: - Patterson Scores AgainThe Exile lures you into its story slowly but surely and then explodes you forward into a sun storm of character and drama. The best novels are those which keep you turning page after page while thinking, "... what would I do?...". You find yourself shutting the book and just thinking for awhile and then not being able to walk away, opening it back up and plunging in again. This is that type of novel. Here a decent man with an old secret love finds himself sinking toward giving up all he holds dear to ... The cover was bent and it was clearly very used, not in good condition as advertised.
