Editorial Review: Product Description: Introduction from the Author When most people think of Waco, Texas, the first things that come to mind are the Branch Davidian ordeal, Janet Reno, and a basketball scandal. It’s hard to ignore such sensational items when browsing schools. But despite Waco’s many regrettable claims to fame (and the fact that the river is polluted, the school is in financial trouble, the faculty is trying to oust the University president, and the bells on Pat Neff Tower ring all the time), Baylor University, really isn’t too bad of a place after all. Trust me. The school is well known for its student organizations taking part in almost every conceivable type of service (cleaning parks, painting houses, and of course, trying to get that darn Brazos River clean. The Baylor 2012 Vision to bring the University to tier-one status is mostly to blame for rising tuition and recent financial troubles, but the perks are fantastic: new buildings, new equipment, a new look to the campus, better parking, and honestly, after your first semester, the bells won’t bother you all that much. In fact, you’ll catch yourself humming along. Hailed as the largest Baptist University in the world, Baylor has seen its fair share of ups and downs, despite its religious affiliation, or maybe because of it. It was chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas and affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. The Baylor seal and the school’s motto is “Pro Ecclesia, Pro Texana” meaning “For church, for state,” and that’s exactly what you’ll find at Baylor. Baylor’s traditions are just as absurd and unusual as any school in the South, especially one wrapped in Texan pride. The school maintains a difficult balance between the rough-and-tumble, go-get-‘em attitude of Texans, and the “Go and preach unto the nations” mentality supported by the school’s Baptist background. At the very least, it makes for a colorful and entertaining student body, but to go to school here, you’ve got to either have a strong religious affiliation or a really good sense of humor—or both. That’s not to say Baylor doesn’t make room for diverse opinions. But in all aspects of activity at Baylor, from student life to academic policy, the University practices what it preaches. Being a Bear in Waco isn’t the same as working toward a degree at Harvard or some other Ivy League school, but Baylor does have visions of becoming a tier-one school. It’s not the best school in Texas. And Waco certainly isn’t the greatest town in the world. (In fact, the one thing you can count on for the weekend is everyone leaving.) It’s no surprise that so many students are caught shouting “Waco sucks!” at least once. It’s not New York. It’s not Los Angeles. But after you adjust to your new surroundings (the South may feel entirely alien to someone from New England) and find your niche, something about Baylor, and the surrounding area, will endear itself to you.
