What do people see in their minds? Most who have never heard the name before tend to focus on the word Christian and form their opinion: it must be a church school, home of the reverberation of old doctrines and nothing more. Fort Worth residents may visualize a moderately well-equipped campus with a conservative following and a decent football team, but theyÂ’re not seeing the whole picture either. TCU is more than a name, more than a college, more than a campus. It is not your average Christian school. The TCU experience is built upon a stronghold of academic value and social initiative, with a pinch of diversity. The academic programs are predicated toward student involvement, so everyone has a chance to learn and participate. For the most part, TCU is really only what you make of it. The setting is such that anyone can find something to be a part of. If you look for almost anything, you can probably find it on campus or within an hourÂ’s drive. Though the students of TCU do not make up a terribly diverse population, the campus environment is still very open and friendly. People are accepted regardless of ethnic, gender, or class distinctions, despite the fact that the majority of the students happen to be fairly wealthy Caucasian females. TCU is made up of a whole community of people who bring forth amazingly different life perspectives and the learning process, regardless of the backgrounds they may have shared. The students support the university, which is clear when you consider the numerous student organizations and athletic clubs, and the number of students who regularly attend football and basketball games. Public speakers and campus-wide debates, which occur frequently here, encourage a constantly evolving thought process and bring the whole student body into an entire new way of thinking. Addison and Randall Clark founded AddRan Male and Female Academy in 1873. AddRan later became TCU and eventually the college moved to Fort Worth. Today, TCU is a 260-acre university, complete with a three-story library, eight different colleges, and some of the finest sports facilities in the nation. The progression from AddRan Male and Female Academy to TCU is an example of the progressive tradition at TCU. By creating a coed college, the Clarks showed that they were ahead of their time, and this progressive nature is still alive today at TCU. Jessica Fleming, Author Texas Christian University
