Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Molly Petree, orphaned by the Civil War, is by her own definition "a spitfire and a burden. I do not care. My family is a dead family, and this is not my home, for I am a refugee girl."

Raised in the ruins of a once prosperous plantation on Agate Hill in North Carolina, she's a refugee who has no interest in self-pity. To document her headstrong life, she collects its artifacts—her lifelong diaries, letters, poems, songs, newspaper clippings, court records, marbles, rocks, dolls, bones (some human, some not).

When a mysterious benefactor appears out of her father's past to rescue her, teenaged Molly Petree never looks back. Taking what she is offered, she saves herself and then risks everything to hold true to her nature and to true love. She casts aside two prosperous, well-born suitors to marry a dashing—and philandering—mountaineer only to be accused of his murder. The end of Molly Petree's story is as unpredictable and as passionate as her own wide-open heart.

Spanning half a century, Lee Smith's portrait of a fiery Southern woman recalls the South from Reconstruction to the Roaring Twenties—and, in the process, gives us Molly Petree, living and breathing, gripping the reader's arm as the story unfolds.

Book Description:
A dusty box discovered in the wreckage of a North Carolina plantation house contains the remnants of an extraordinary life: an 1870s diary of a young girl, letters, poems, songs, newspaper clippings, court records, marbles, rocks, dolls, and bones. It’s through these treasured mementos that we meet the unforgettable heroine of Lee Smith’s new novel.

Raised in the smoldering ruin of the post–Civil War American South, young Molly Petree, now orphaned, has no intention of wasting time on self-pity. She means to live her life to its fullest. So, when a mysterious benefactor appears out of her father’s past to rescue her, she doesn’t look back—until she is an old woman and returns to the farm on Agate Hill. Spanning half a century, On Agate Hill tells the story of a woman who risks everything to remain true to herself. It’s a novel of obsessive love, unexpected adventures, and luck—both good and bad. Like a ballad of the Old South, Molly Petree’s tale resonates with passion, humor, and drama.

Lee Smith, a virtuoso of voice and vision, creates flesh-and-blood characters tempered with equal doses of comedy and tragedy. Like her popular and beloved novels Oral History and Fair and Tender Ladies, On Agate Hill is storytelling at its very best.

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - What a world she has created !
Not since I first read COLD MOUNTAIN have I really enjoyed and devoured a book so quickly. I can't wait to read more of her work. After I read the authors note, some of the heart that must have poured out and into Lee's writing became so apparent.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Lee Smith Does it Again
Lee Smith seems to do her best work when she writes in the voice of a spirited young girl, as she did in Fair and Tender Ladies, and travels with the protagonist on her life journey. This story is told mostly, though not completely, through Molly Petree, a young survivor of the post-Civil War South. With the help of a benefactor who was a friend of her dead father, she attends a school for young ladies. She later falls in love with a banjo-playing mountain man in the Appalachians Smith seems to ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Superb reading but why Tuscany Miller?
This is one of the most superb books I have read in a long time, particluarly because I am from the South, love journaling, historical fiction AND non-fiction, and was enthralled with Molly Petree's life. I originally checked the book out from the library, but after reading it, decided to buy my own copy for "my favorite books" shelf. HOWEVER -- I am stumped by Lee Smith's need to interject the pervesion of sex change and same sex marriage in the intro to this book. At first it was a turn off, but ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Very enjoyable read
For some reason I keep getting Lee Smith confused with Michael Lee West and after reading this book, I will never get those two authors confused again. For one thing, Lee Smith knows how to write a story and keep the reader entertained from the first page to the last page. It is a good piece of fiction and one that I am definitely passing onto other people. It's just a charming story about a woman trying to live her life in the best way she knows how.

Molly Petree was orphaned by the Civil ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - It just didn't grab me...
I thought I'd enjoy this book- there was just something about it that intrigued me, I guess. But it never grabbed me- and it never got very enjoyable.
Molly Petree is made an orphan by the Civil War. She spends her entire childhood on a ruined plantation, barely noticed by her uncle, his paramore, or the many former slaves who still inhabit Agate Hill. After her uncle dies and his paramore finds herself another lover, who ends up raping Molly. Eventually Molly is rescued by her father's friend, who ... Read More
