It is commonly assumed that a book dealing with a holy God should sound elevated, stately, and ceremonial. If this is how you’ve always viewed the New Testament, you’re about to make a surprising discovery. One of the most striking features of the New Testament is that it was written in the street language of the day––the idiom of the playground and marketplace, not the formal, lofty language of government decrees and historical documents. Written in the rhythms and idiom of contemporary language––the way you’d talk with friends, write a letter, or discuss politics––The Message brings out the expressive, earthy flavor of the New Testament. Which means that, whether you’ve been reading the Bible for years or are exploring it for the first time, The Message will startle and surprise you. And it will allow you to experience firsthand the same power and directness that motivated its original readers to change the course of history many centuries ago. Average Rating:

I keep it on hand to read with other English translations and it gives a good perspective. Rating: - The MessageThe Message is great for reading and enjoying the scriptures. It makes a wonderful Christmas gift. Everyone I've shared it with has purchased copies to share with their friends and family. Rating: - Small PrintLove the Bible, but the print was too small for my own comfort. I gave it away to a younger person. Rating: - Reads like a Novel! The Bible is God revealing Himself to mankind. He shows different aspects of Himself throughout His book. Reading The Message reveals WHY people were furious with Jesus. A fresh look at the same truths with the lenses of relationship to clear one's vision. A MUST READ, after all the Bible was never intended to be a textbook! Rating: - Resurrecting Christian LanguageThe great Christian novelist Walker Percy once lamented that the words of Christianity had become devalued and almost meaningless: "The old words of grace are worn smooth as poker chips." Walker Percy, as always, was right. The story of Christ still carries the news of salvation, but if nobody can hear that story anymore because the words sound so worn out, there's not a lot of hope. That's why I love Eugene Peterson's efforts in The Message. Our Christian language has ... Read More
