John Barron, the newest and youngest member of the elite LAPD unit, learns quickly that the 5-2 has their own deadly system of justice, and that even the slightest protest will result in his suffering the same swift fate. Thus begins a dark, explosive struggle between good and evil—pitting Barron’s squad against an exceedingly imaginative and brutal killer. Suddenly the game widens when John flees to London with his sister, Rebecca, and they are thrown into a race against time. Pursuing them is a baroness, beautiful and cruel, who will stop at nothing to protect her family, her fortune, and her global ambitions. Her secret—spanning oceans, continents, the collapse of the USSR, even the death of the Tsars—is a stunning revelation that could catapult her to the pinnacle of world power. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Great Read!Excellent story. Kept me captive from beginning to end. I recommend reading this before the Machiavelli Covenant. You'll have a better understanding of where John Baron's character originates from. I hated to have another Folsom novel end. Rating: - Repetitiveness creates long, long, long stretches of boredom. While the plot is entertainingly preposterous, the repetitiveness of the protagonist's inner monologue made me wish I could be killed by the main villain. While the reader already knows the ins and outs of the plot (often telegraphed 20 miles in advance), the protagonist does not. Page after page we are treated to his inner monologue of realization that summarizes what we already know, often word for word from one paragraph or page to another. In addition, there is nothing exciting or different about ... Read More Rating: - A Waste of TimeI should have stopped at page 247 when the scene changed from Los Angeles to Europe. But I thought the story (I use the word charitably) might get better. How wrong I was! It only got more ridiculous. The book could easily shed 350 pages by eliminating many episodes, including the protagonist's confinement and an icy car trip in Switzerland and an account of his sister's unbelievable lineage. Here's a sample of overwriting (the simple act of ordering a martini - page 252): "He picked it up and ... Extremely disatisfied Debi McGee Rating: - Uhhhhggggg!!!Hands down one of the 3 worst reads I've ever had the misfortune of picking up. I just don't know how I got through this one. I must be a glutton for punishment thinking it would have to get better at some point only to find the book finished before that happened. I should have known it was going to be bad from the beginning when they were describing LAPD's Robbery Homicide Division (RHD). C'mon, at least have some accuracy if you're going to be describing a factual topic. RHD led by ... Read More
