As food runs low and the days go from broiling hot to freezing cold, it is all Dashti can do to keep them fed and comfortable. But the arrival outside the tower of Saren’s two suitors—one welcome, and the other decidedly less so—brings both hope and great danger, and Dashti must make the desperate choices of a girl whose life is worth more than she knows. With Shannon Hale’s lyrical language, this forgotten but classic fairy tale from the Brothers Grimm is reimagined and reset on the central Asian steppes; it is a completely unique retelling filled with adventure and romance, drama and disguise. I love how it is written in a diary format, but the setting seems to be slightly dull and lacking descriptions at times. Having read 'Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World', which the setting was based on, for a world history class, I just can't help but to wish that the book was set more heavily on Mongol culture. I also wish it was longer. I finished the book in ... Read More Rating: - Review of a DayThe book called Book of a Thousand Days is a very exciting book that takes place many years ago. There is a princess named Lady Saren and her mucker maid named Dashti. Dashti is a mucker which is kind of like a farmer in our days, and they sing songs to help heal you mentally and physically. Lady Saren refuses to marry a man who her father set her up with because she was in love with someone else. Her father locks her up in a tower for 7 years because of this. Lady Saren becomes extremely depressed ... Read More Rating: - WonderfulI was anxious to pick up this book after having read "The Princess Academy" and "The Goose Girl." I really like Shannon Hale's style of writing, sense of humor, characters, and stories. I wasn't sure if I'd like this one since it is written in a journal format as if I were reading Dashti's personal journal and not witnessing the story myself. However, I found that the story still flowed and soon forgot that it was a journal. Unlike Hale's other stories that slowly build, this story starts off right in ... Read More Rating: - Enjoyed it despite the diary formatI don't really like books in diary format, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book despite the format. The world-building is good and the characters act and change realistically throughout the book. The romance in the story develops fairly slowly. For those who care, there are a few kisses, but no sex. Overall, I'd recommend this as "a good, clean fun" novel. Genre Reviews http://genrereviews.blogspot.com/ Rating: - a book i enjoyedThe title of my book is Book of a Thousand Days written by Shannon Hale. This book is fantasy fiction. When a 16 year old girl named Saren and 15 year old Dashti get locked up in a tower for seven years because Saren will not marry to the guy her dad wants her to. There are a million rats in the cellar and one night Dashti has a dream if the rats can get in they can get out! I don't want to give away the ending so you will just have to read it! I would suggest this book to middle ... Read More
