Perched in the far corner of a run-down New England mall, the Red Lobster hasn't been making its numbers and headquarters has pulled the plug. But manager Manny DeLeon still needs to navigate a tricky last shift. With four shopping days left until Christmas, Manny must convince his near-mutinous staff to hunker down and serve the final onslaught of hungry retirees, lunatics, and holiday office parties. All the while, he's wondering how to handle the waitress he's still in love with, his pregnant girlfriend at home, and where to find the present that will make everything better. Presented unabridged on 3 CDs. Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - LobsterThough simple in design, this book has tremendous depth of character and theme. Following the manager of the Red Lobster through his last day before closing the doors forever, we learn of his loyalty, nobility, compassion, sensitivity and insight into life as well as the complexities of life that elude him. Thought provoking and touching. A very fine read. Rating: - surveying the past, living in the present, and looking forwardIt's not surprising to me that I loved Steward O'Nan's Last Night at the Lobster; he's one of my favorite writers, after all, and this books stands out for me among the many books of his I love. It's not only a book with a lot of heart; it's also a book that is timely--as 2009 is said to be the year that many in retail and service lose their jobs, the year that many malls and shops and restaurants turn out their lights for good. On the surface it's a book about a day in ... Read More Rating: - RealI'm one of those people who believes a story lives or dies by its characters. If you don't care about the people in a story, anything that happens to them is meaningless. Plot, setting, even theme are all subservient to sympathetic characters. They don't even have to be particularly righteous or overly flawed or funny or pathetic or whatever. They just have to be real. Stewart O'Nan's "Last Night at the Lobster" is one of those rare books that exemplifies this notion. It's a few ... Read More Rating: - a glimpse at the blue collar worldWhile this book about the last 24 hours of a closing Red Lobster restaurant does not set the world on fire, it does take me back to the days of working my way through college by way of restaurant waitressing. It also puts a face to closures due to a sagging economy when "bail-outs" were not an option. Maybe CEO's should read this one! Rating: - Good book....just not as good as I hoped it would beThis book caught my eye recently so I bought it and after 146 or so pages I now am not sure I really enjoyed it at all. Sure, Manny (the manager of the Red Lobster in New Britain) is trying to keep up the appearances for thhe restaurant despite the fact that the corporate big wigs have decided that it will be closed after tonight, but his co-workers and employees just did not interest me enough to really care about them. I liked the character (Eddie), but he only has a small role in the book. Read More
