Acting Out (Summer Camp Secrets)

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - A Positive Psychologist perspective on Acting Out (Summer Camp Secrets)
The Truth: I'm a Girl, I'm Smart and I Know EverythingAs a positive psychologist and also the author of a fictional diary for girls, tweens and teens, The Truth (I'm a girl, I'm smart and I know everything) I am always eager to see what is available for girls and tweens. What impressed me about Acting Out (Summer Camp Secrets) is that the author actually tackled one of the most important developmental issues a girl faces as she grows into the teen years. In fact, in my book, The Truth, the protagonist, a 10-11 year old girl is facing the same developmental dilemma. How can a girl grow up and hold on to the best of herself? And how can she know for sure who she is in the first place? In this book, the girl takes on a new persona at camp to try to experiment with who she is. This of course results in lots of adventures. At the end of the book, Judith says that maybe "someday I'd know all the answers. Maybe someday I'd know exactly who I was..." One thing she knew for sure is that she wasn't the girl she pretended to be.
In The Truth, the 'girl' solves her dilemma in a very different way. She figures out how to hold on to the best of herself as she grows up in a secret way that nobody can take from her.

Acting Out (Summer Camp Secrets) is a good read and one made even better if mom reads it also, so both mom and daughter can discuss the serious underlying issue in the book: We all need to find a way to grow up, know who we are and be true to ourselves!

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Like "Pranked", a Good Read for Kids
Just like the first book in this series, "Pranked", "acting Out" is a good read for kids. The main character uses summer camp to "try on" a new personality, which provides a good hook to dig into how kids try and discover who they are at this age. "Acting Out" is a nice contrast/complement to "Pranked" too because the main character here has completely different fears and concerns, but it still rings true for this age.
