Hi, this is my pet turtle called Hank.
I never had a turtle before so have had to lear a lot! Hank is a mud turtle that I got from a friend.
Our local pet store told me that Hank is actually a red-eared slider turtle. You can tell that from the red markings on each side of his head.
Hank is a really good pet. He likes when I feed him turtle food and treats every other day.
It is fun to feed him lettuce, small bits of carrots and peeled grapes, but I have to be careful so that he doesn't nip me. He is pretty good most of the time, but I have to be careful, as he likes to snap sometimes.
This turtles loves to swim and he moves around a lot. He really likes to get out in the sun and crawl around our deck sometimes but I don't want his shell to dry out if he's in the sun too long, so I often carry him to the pond.
Hank loves to swim so usually he stays in our little pond in the yard. He also liks to crawl out of the pond to catch crickets in the lawn.
Hank digs around in the mud at the edge of the pond and this makes me laugh. He also likes the big branch I put into the pond as well. My brother said that this would be a good idea and it is! Hank creeps up that and sits there sunning himself, then goes in for another dip in the pond.
The one scary thing I learned about red-eared slider turtles is that they can carry bacteria and make people sick. So every time I carry Hank around I have to wash my hands like crazy, so that I won't get sick. I make sure to tell everyone else to wash their hands too.
