This gorgeous dog is Nera, a female Boxer, who is definitely a pet star in our family! We're very happy to honor her here with her own star and corner of fame.
Nera is now 6 years old and is well loved. Nera hasn’t always had it easy though. She was abandoned when she was just a 7 month old puppy, on a very cold day in January. Unbelievable!
How she joined our family starts out innocently enough. My niece and her daughter were out together spending the day at Bear Mountain State Park. They noticed a puppy wandering around off-leash and following another older dog and family. The puppy looked undernourished and scared. After ice skating, my niece noticed that this scared little puppy was now tied to a fire hydrant outside the Park Police Office. She went in to ask about the puppy and was told that it had actually been abandoned and was now awaiting a ride to the animal shelter. Sadly, this is not an unusual case, as close to 300 dogs a year are left at the park and most have to be put down as no one will adopt them, according to the park officials.
After playing with the puppy, my niece decided to rescue the pup from a sad fate, so she took this little dog home for what she thought would be a short stay. The pup's whereabouts was reported to every Animal Control Officer in Rockland, Putnam and Westchester County, just in case she had run away and her rightful owner was in fact searching for her. Fortunately the dog had a microchip and the SPCA was most helpful in helping to track down her origins and helping with medical care.
It was found that the pup belonged to a pet store owner. There had been a break-in at the pet store some six months earlier and the dog was actually stolen property! The owner decided to give this lovely dog to my niece. That was over 5 years ago.
While life started out hard for Nera, she now has a strong bond with her new and loving family. She is a special pet who is very lovable. She loves to snuggle on your lap.
When I visit, I can’t get over how gentle she is. Nera loves to play fetch, go for walks at the park, play soccer and although not the best swimmer, go to the beach. We still cannot believe how others can discard tiny little pets and are glad that fate allowed for us to find this lovely little gal.
