Horse Breeds by Name
Unless you are a "horse person", you may not know that a Fox Trotter is actaully a horse. You may just think of the dancing school downtown instead! The name, Holsteiner would likely bring the image of a Holstein cow to your mind, but there is also a horse breed called Holsteiner. This German horse was used as a war horse for carrying heavy supplies as far back as the 14th century! Today it is used as a carriage horse and for heavy jumping events.
The names of a number of other horse breeds are easily recognized... most of us know names like the Pinto, American Saddlebred, Andalusian, Appaloosa, Arabian, Begian, and Canadian. Some also know the Cayuse, Clydesdale, Morgan, Mustang, Palimino, American Paint and Percheron, as well as the Shetland Pony, the Quarter Horse, the Thoroughbred, Tennessee and Welsh Pony. According to an Oklahoma State University article, there is some belief that the Przewalski horse is the ancestor of all modern breeds, though having a smaller, more robust build, and upright mane, and a low-set tail.
There is a Foundation for the preservation and protection of the Przewalski's Horse, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands who have breeding preserves in Askania Nova, Ukraine, in 1992 two combined breeding groups of Przewalski horses were reintroduced to Mongolia with the ultimate plan to reintroduce the animals to the open steppe.
