Ask A Pet Sitter Print E-mail

pet-sitting-challengeLike a kennel owner, a pet sitter is someone who cares for other people's pets when required. Pet sitters often help out during times when people can't take their pet with them on holidays, business trips, or hospital stays. But they can also be called upon for shorter durations on a regular basis.

The pet sitter cares for the pet in the pet's own home. This means that the pet can stay in his own familiar surroundings. A pet sitter may be required to just drop in to check on the pet each day or may actually be invited to stay full-time to look after the pet.

The pet sitter's role is to ensure that pets placed in their care are kept safe, secure and well cared for through proper feeding, hygiene, exercise... and all the usual attention to make the pet feel comfortable... and to make sure the pet doesn't escape by accident! And, to do their pet-sitting tasks well, the pet sitter must first get proper information about the pet's likes, dislikes, habits, favorite hiding places, health, feeding and medical requirements from the pet's owner.

Tips from Lori and Scott Mangold who train professional Pet Sitters...

As a flight attendant, I understood the problems that arise when travel separates people from their pets.  My husband, Scott, and I even postponed our honeymoon for a year because we did not live near our families or know our neighbors well enough to trust leaving our pets in their care.  We knew they would be happier and safer in our home and we were sure other people preferred to keep their pets at home, too.  In 1988 we started our pet sitting business called "Paws for Awhile".  After only a few months, our service was so successful, we were turning away business!

Why is pet sitting booming?
Because our lifestyles are changing.  Today, we are more career-oriented, we travel more for business and pleasure and depend increasingly on domestic services.  Our pets are an important part of our families and finding proper care for them can be a problem.  Now, our 'babies' can stay in their own homes where they are safe and happy and we no longer have to worry about them when we leave.
