Kelly Girl Print E-mail

kelly-1She is less than a foot tall, has melting brown eyes, salt and pepper locks, and four strong paws. She's a dog with a heart larger than her body... or so it seems to us.

When my brother Ken was very ill, Kelly, a beautiful Schnoodle (part Schnauser and part Poodle) who has been a family pet for more than six years, showed her true colors and spirit. She was a gift to everyone during a really tough time.

During Ken's illness, Kelly more than earned the title of “Man’s Best Friend”. She knew intuitively how seriously ill Ken was and she proudly and defiantly took on the roles of caretaker, protector, alarm system, and even pain management consultant!

When Ken was moved to a hospital bed in his living room Kelly was very upset that she did not have as much access to him as she had before. As a self-appointed personal caretaker she insisted on sleeping on the bed, near him or even under the bed. this little wonder dog never left Ken's side.

As protector Kelly put herself between Ken and his many visitors until she knew they meant him no harm, and as a very effective alarm system When we slept, Kelly made sure that when Ken needed anything, we were wakened immediately to tend to his needs.

Her presence continually calmed and relaxed, which no doubt helped him to manage pain and use less pain killers. This in turn allowed him to remain lucid during his last days at home with us, which allowed time for all of us to say our sad goodbyes.

Kelly's mourning cries will remain in my memory. Her heartfelt tribute to ken's death will always be a lifting eulogy in my mind. The comfort she gave me after and since will always be remembered…  she is not simply a dog or a family pet... she is trusted and true and our very dear and beloved furry friend.
