Horse Breeds by Name
Unless you are a "horse person", you may not know that a Fox Trotter is actaully a horse. You may just think of the dancing school downtown instead! The name, Holsteiner would likely bring the image of a Holstein cow to your mind, but there is also a horse breed called Holsteiner. This German horse was used as a war horse for carrying heavy supplies as far back as the 14th century! Today it is used as a carriage horse and for heavy jumping events.
The names of a number of other horse breeds are easily recognized... most of us know names like the Pinto, American Saddlebred, Andalusian, Appaloosa, Arabian, Begian, and Canadian. Some also know the Cayuse, Clydesdale, Morgan, Mustang, Palimino, American Paint and Percheron, as well as the Shetland Pony, the Quarter Horse, the Thoroughbred, Tennessee and Welsh Pony. There are howevr many other horse breeds which you may not have heard about...
Other horse breeds that may be a little less recognizable to the general population may be the Caspian, Haflinger, Hackney, Kiso, Knabstrup, Misaki, Norix, Noma, Ob, Orlov Trotter, Shire Horse and the Anglo Kaborda or Mongolian Wild Horse, to name but a few. For more information about these exotic horse breeds, check the Oklahoma State University Board of Regents' site.
The breeds that are often found to be the most suitable for riding schools and that are a popular family pets include the American Paint, Quarter Horse, Canadian, Arabian and the Morgan. Their intelligence, gentle natures, patience and willing dispositions makes them excellent in the repetitive tasks of horse-rider training.
