Dear Val,
I've had my horse, Jessie, for 3 years now and we both love to go for long rides together. Lately, whenever we go on one of our rides, Jessie doesn't seem the same. She doesn't seem to be as happy. I have had the vet check her out but he can't find anything physically wrong. I am hoping that you can give me some suggestions as to how I can find out what is bothering Jessie.
Thank You. Janette-Rae in Fort Worth
P.S. Sammi from MillionDollarPetPix.com sent me!
Hi Janette-Rae!
I'm glad that you are paying attention to Jessie, have noticed her behavior changes and that you had your vet check her out. That's the first thing to do in a case like this. However, even though your vet couldn't find anything obviously wrong, Jessie is having a problem. Our animal friends always do what makes sense to them, and she is communicating as clearly as she can to you that something is wrong. Until I work with you both, it's mpossible for me to know exactly what to tell you or how best to resolve this.
Here are some things to consider and that I would be asking if I was working with you:
Think back to when this started. Has anything else changed in her life: with management or routine, feed changes, maybe even something with her fellow horse companions, or with you or your family? Are there any other areas of her life that she seems listless or less enthused about? Has anything odd happened in the area that she lives in or the area that you ride in?
When you run your hands over her body, do you find any cold or hot spots? Has she been stumbling more lately or carrying herself differently, or does she seem more sensitive to touching her in certain spots? Does she seem more wary or cautious than usual?
Problems like this can be very complex, stemming from undiagnosed physical problems, or can be more emotional or even mental in nature, and can also come from our environment.
Our horses do feel pain, physically and emotionally, and they think, remember and reason. They tell stories amongst themselves and they listen to us when we chatter -- to them or around them where they can hear us. There may even be something going on with you that you are unaware of that is affecting her! You are connected, after all, and what causes you stress or emotional/mental imbalance also affects her -- and vice versa.
If it is a physical problem, I should be able to pinpoint what is going on by asking her for her feedback (where does it hurt, how does it feel, when did it start, what helps and what makes it worse...), and also by doing an energetic body scan. I am known for finding problems long before they become outwardly apparent, and also for resolving mystery lameness or soundness issues. That way we can work towards healing it before it can cause further breakdown, with a much better chance of recovery.
Once I worked with a horse who heard a story about another horse that had a bad experience with her person. They had gotten into an accident together, and the horse had to be put down and her person was seriously injured. Not surprisingly, the entire barn was grieving and in shock, and none of the horses were acting like themselves.
My client didn't have any idea what had happened to make her horse seem so sad and out of sorts. When I communicated with my client's horse, he told us about the story he'd heard, and how dreadful it was. We then had a chance to communicate with the barn in general so they could express their feelings, ask their questions and begin to come to terms about what had happened. I was thrilled to hear that the very next day, everyone was back to normal and all was well again.
Thank you again for your question about your horse, Jessie. I'm happy to help. Horses are a specialty of mine, so I really enjoy working with horse lovers who truly love them and want to improve their relationships.
You should have received an email explaining how I work (be sure and check your spam/junk filters if you didn't get it). I need you to fill out my Questionnaires (one for you and one for your horse), and get me a picture of your horse (doesn't have to be a glamour pix, just a good one that you like). Instructions are on my website:

Then, we just need to schedule a time to work together. Let me know what you would like to do, and if you have any other questions.
Wishing you and Jessie all the best,
