A dog's disability and an owners great love brought about an invention that helps many other disabled dogs.
When Watson, a Sheepador (part sheepdog and part lab) was 15 years old he became affected with arthritis and hip dysplasia. He really had difficulty walking and needed to be carried everywhere.
His owner, Arnie Costell, knew that he would have to find a way to continue walking Watson and while watching a show about rock climbing, Arnie got the idea to make a sling for Watson's rear end.
Arnie went to a pet store, bought five leashes, cut them up and sewed them in a fashion so as he was able to slip it over Watson's "tush" for support.
"When I first started using the Bottom's Up Leash, it was absolutely awesome. I know that my boy Watson really got off on the attention that he was receiving from people we met on our walks. He knew that this Leash was his, it carried his stamp of approval, and that itself somehow seemed to affect him in the positive."
Sadly, Watson has passed on, but his legacy is the creation of the Bottoms-Up Leash. Because of the help this unique support leash provides to thousands of other senior, disabled or injured dogs, Watson lives on as a true hero. See Watson's star and corner of fame in PetPix Time Capsule...
For Arnie, it is a bittersweet story. He misses "his boy Watson" and thinks of him every day. But Arnie is thrilled to know that through his love for his pet, he was inspired to create a really helpful invention that makes a positive difference to the lives of other pets and pet owners as they struggle with pet ailments.
Arnie regards Watson as his business partner and says, "Where else can one talk about their animal continuously while they are working. I like to think Watson is sitting up in heaven thinking that he is a big shot because he has an Internet business. (I am smiling as I say that)... I have been told that he winks every time I sell another leash."
This story has two heroes really ... Watson the inspiration and Arnie the inventor... pet and pet lover helping other pets and pet lovers!
