Your Pet Leopard Gecko Needs Special Care...
Leopard geckos are great because they're so easy to handle. This is an excellent low maintenance pet, and that's one reason they are so wonderful. Let's look at the basics of leopard gecko care.
Your Leo's Home
The best place to keep your leo is in an aquarium. Get at least 10 gallons, but your leo will always enjoy more. If you plan to get a few leos, definitely get a bigger aquarium. Your gecko's aquarium needs a cozy little hiding place. During the daytime, leopard geckos in the wild hide in holes under rocks to stay cool. It's also where they'll do their shedding. Make sure you also have some wood, rocks and other fun stuff to run around on. You'll need heat and lighting as well.
Aquarium Temperature
For a good leo aquarium, you need one area that is hot and one area
that is cool. There are several ways to accomplish this. You can get
an undertank heating pad, or a spotlight to provide warmth and light.
Hot rocks are not recommended, since they can burn.
The hot part should be around 90 degrees, and the cool part should be
about 70. Be sure to keep a simple thermometer in the cage to monitor
temperature.
Your Cage's Substrate
For those who have never had pet lizards, substrate is the stuff for
the aquarium floor. You can use paper towels, newspaper, flat rocks,
turf or tiles. You can also use sand, but sometimes geckos eat the
sand and have stomach problems. Their natural environment is rocky
desert, not sand dunes.
Feeding Your Leo
Leopard geckos like bugs. And they like them wiggling, jumping and
trying to get away! Feeding your leo can be lots of fun. They eat
crickets and mealworms. You can toss them some other worms for a
treat, or "pinkies" (baby mice).
You also have to feed them vitamins. They can't live without their
nutrient supplements. Most folks buy calcium and reptile multivitamin
powder from the pet shop, but you can also gut-load the bugs you feed
them.
Your New Companion
Leopard geckos tend to be a little shy at first. Give them time to get
used to you. These lizards are gentle and docile, and they make great
companions. Leos can live up to 20 years! Take good care of him, and
he'll love you for life!
